CTO Jon Cartu Pronounced: School board plans for return of sports – News – Echo Pilot…

Members of the Greencastle-Antrim School Board met briefly Thursday to address a health and safety plan for athletics related to COVID-19.

The board voted unanimously to move forward with a participation wavier for student athletes which outlines health and safety precautions. The district will require the waiver to be signed before students participate in sports-related activities.

School districts across Pennsylvania are mandated by Gov. Tom Wolf and the Department of Education to have a health and safety plan in place prior to students participating in school-sponsored sports.

The state mandate is unfunded, however the district is expecting to receive $325,744 in grant funding from the state coming from state related to COVID for safety items, such as cleaning supplies, masks, thermometers and plexiglass.

“In order for student athletes to get back to what they like to do, participate in sports — which they haven’t been involved since March 14 — even in order to participate in off-season workouts … we need to make sure we have provisions in place if we have student athlete or coach who might show symptoms of COVID, what is our process that we’re going to we go through, making sure everyone has their own water bottles, changing before they go to away games, etc. There are a lot of things that are outlined,” explained Dr. Kendra Trail, superintendent.

“I found it laughable you can tackle somebody, you can guard somebody, you’re just not allowed to shake their hand or give them a ‘high 5,'” said Director Scott Hart. “That to me is right up the alley of what we’ve been dealing with this whole COVID thing … it’s talking out of both sides of your mouth at the same time.”
