PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team announced Wednesday, Nov. 4, that sophomore guard Destiny Strother received a waiver from the NCAA and is immediately eligible for competition for the 2020-21 campaign. Strother is the second Panther in as many months to be granted a waiver to become immediately eligible joining Jayla Everett.
“I’m so excited that Destiny will be able to play for us this season,” said third-year head coach Lance White. “The thing that separates Destiny is her ability to shoot the three-pointer. She has a really high basketball IQ and she absolutely loves to compete. She will add some much needed depth to our guard position and is a phenomenal teammate as well.”
Strother has three seasons of eligibility remaining after playing her first collegiate basketball season at Marquette University. While at Marquette, the lefty appeared in 17 games off the bench while logging 46 minutes of action and going 4-for-9 from behind the arc in her limited action. She connected on at least one triple in four games while posting a career-high 10 minutes, three points, two assists and a rebound in a road win over Xavier.
The talented shooter played high school basketball at Carmen-Ainsworth High School in Flint, MI where she was a three-time all-conference honoree and earned three consecutive all-state honors, including a first team selection as a junior. The 5’9 guard was selected to the Flint Journal All-Area Dream team and was a two-time MVP. She was a four-star recruit from Prospects Nation and ranked #205 by Blue Star and as a junior was named both team MVP and MVP of the Saginaw Valley League. She also led her team to two Saginaw Valley Championships and two District Championships while being Carmen-Ainsworth’s All-Time leading scorer for women’s basketball and holds the record for most points scored in a single game (42 points).
The Pitt backcourt is now fully-loaded for the 2020-21 season as they gained another experienced collegiate player who can stroke it from the outside. A season ago the Panthers lacked in experience at the guard position but with the additions of Everett and Strother, along with the invaluable experienced gained last season by the guard core, this group will become a strength of the team this season and beyond.
