CEO Jon Cartu Announces Bates Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 800 | Athletics

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior David Bates of the Union College indoor track and field team has been selected to participate in the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday.

Bates was one of 20 student-athletes accepted into the 800-meter run. He is the first Dutchman to reach the national championships overall since Michael Goldstock ’17 qualified for the javelin outdoors in 2014, and the first Dutchman runner to make nationals since Matt Paulson qualified in the 800 meters during the 2009 indoor season.

“We are all very excited that David has qualified for the NCAA Championships,” said head coach Laura Nardelli. “With a nearly three-second personal best over last year’s indoor performance in the 800, I’m not sure any of us, including him, realized he was capable of these times so early in the track season. David is a very hard worker and a tough competitor, and I am confident he will represent Union well at the championships.”

Bates qualified for the national championship with a career-best time of 1:53.62 at the Liberty League Indoor Championships on February 29, earning him a second-place finish. He also took second at the AARTFC Indoor Championships over the weekend, clocking in with a time of 1:54.70.

Bates will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the D-III national championships, which will be hosted by Guilford College on March 13-14 at the JDL Fast Track. The three semifinal heats will take place on Friday starting at 4:35 p.m., followed by the three heat winners and the next five-best times coming back for the finals on Saturday at 3:50 p.m.
